When You Can Get A Registration Refund In NSW
You’re generally eligible for a refund when the registration is fully cancelled. This includes cases where the vehicle has been written off, is no longer roadworthy or has been sold to a wrecker, dismantler or recycler. You can also claim a refund if you’re moving interstate and won’t be keeping the NSW registration.

You cannot get a refund if you transfer the registration to another owner, because the rego stays active rather than being cancelled. To claim a refund, you’ll need to visit a Service NSW Centre and formally cancel the registration. You must return both number plates, bring proof of identity and provide your bank details so the refund can be deposited into your account.
If the car was scrapped, you may also need a disposal receipt. After cancellation, the refund is issued automatically by Transport for NSW. Keep in mind that the CTP Green Slip refund is handled separately and must be requested through your insurer.

Your refund is based on the unused portion of the registration fees, motor vehicle tax and any additional charges paid upfront.
Because registration is always paid in advance, cancelling early means you may be entitled to get money back for the remaining months. CTP insurance is refunded by your insurer, so that part must be claimed separately.
